An anatomy of absolute truth, at AF Cinema
In the region of San Francisco Bay, a radio station made a prediction which drew the attention of the whole world: The Apocalypse is near, and the Judgement Day is to be on the 21st of May 2011! More and more people, from different social strata are drawn by this apocalyptic message. Gradually, the followers move away from the daily reality, they quit their jobs and leave their homes, and the only source of truth becomes Family Radio.
The film Right Between Your Ears (directed by Sheila Marshall), which will be screened on Thursday, March 2nd, at 7 PM, at Astra Film Cinema, presents a modern day story about the ease people accept as inalienable truth theories which were voiced by self-proclaimed prophets using techniques of media manipulation.
The iconic figure of false prophets auguring the Apocalypse is very well known in Christian culture as early as the Middle Ages. The film allows us to figure out what are the means through which Harold Camping backs up his prophecies before crowds with convincing evidence. The precise date of the end of the world is given out through the power of the media: dozens of local radio stations of Family Radio, meeting with the radio audience and the distribution of thousands of promotional items. The messages of the Reverend have been shown on many billboards even in Bucharest, triggering controversy at the time.
The 21st of May came and went by, without news about earthquakes or the Apocalypse. Some followers tried to understand the delay, others questioned the prophecy and stopped listening to the shows on Family Radio. How could something that seemed so logical be in fact wrong? Harold Camping is the only one who apparently does not accept that his prophecy turned out to be incorrect, and he even goes further by announcing a new date for the end of the world.
One ticket is 6 lei. Tickets are available 30 minutes before the screening at Astra Film Cinema (Piața Mică 11, Sibiu). For further information, call: 0751.166.516
