Dincolo de indiscutabila valoare etnografica si de inaltul umanism al discursului antropologic continut, “Gandhi’s Children” are marele merit de a ne reaminti că, înainte de toate, filmul este mirarea din privirea autorului, întoarsă duios către lume şi documentul imperfect al unui act de investigare a realităţii. |

For the best treatment of the questions of identity and nationalism in a post-Communist society. Alyosha analyses the ways to redefine an oppressed national psyche following the loss of the geographical and political certitudes imposed by the past totalitarian regimes. In an innovative way, the main character of the film is a statue which crosses Estonia’s recent history and upon which are concentrated all the ethno-political tensions which affect today’s Europe.
Pentru felul original în care tratează chestiunea identităţii şi a naţionalismului într-o societate post-comunistă. Alioşa analizează modalităţile redefinirii unei identităţi naţionale reprimate şi care caută să se refacă în urma prăbuşirii graniţelor şi a certitudinilor impuse de regimurile trecute. În mod inovativ, personajul central al filmului este o statuie care parcurge istoria recentă a Estoniei şi pe care se concentrează toate tensiunile etno-politice ce afectează această Europă în căutare de noi repere. |

For the sensible way in which we are shown the functionning of the procedure of forgiveness in a blood conflict in today’s Albania, where for a long while the vendetta seemed to prevail as the only form of justice. The film cleverly uses rough footage coming from the characters themselves, thus showing us through it the human capacity to transcend pain and guilt in order to safeguard collective dignity and the capacity to reinstaure the lost social harmony.
Pentru felul plin de respect în care sunt prezentate procedurile iertării unei crime în Albania de astăzi, unde, vreme îndelungată, vendetta părea a se impune drept singura formă de justiţie. Filmul foloseşte foarte abil imagini filmate chiar de personaje, ilustrînd prin acestea capacitatea oamenilor de a depăşi sentimentele de durere şi vinovăţie pentru a salva esenţialul: demnitatea colectivităţii şi capacitatea acesteia de a reface armonia socială sfîşiată de conflict. |

A classic film of “salvage anthropology”, documenting the disappearing traditions of the Russian Old Believers’ community in the Danube Delta. The director’s access to her subjects speaks of mutual long-term respect and trust, with dedication and commitment to her characters. The film is crafted with sensitivity and a beautiful understanding of the power of the visual image to reflect the passage of time, space and communal memory, and ends on a charming and hopeful message for the future. Filmed with respect over three years, Birds’ Way penetrates the life of a vanishing minority in the historical context of today’s Romania.
Un exemplu classic de “antropologie de urgenţă”, un film despre tradiţiile pe cale de dispariţie ale lipovenilor din Delta Dunării. Relaţia regizoarei cu personajele pune în lumină respectul şi încrederea reciproce la care s-a ajuns graţie investiţiei afective şi implicării în viaţa celor filmaţi. Materialul este tratat cu delicateţea provenită din utilizarea mesteşugită a tehnicilor vizuale pentru a reflecta spaţiul, timpul şi memoria colectivă, totul încheindu-se cu un mesaj pentru viitor sensibil şi încărcat de speranţă. Filmat cu mult respect de-a lungul a trei ani, Drumul Păsarilor pătrunde cotidianul unei minorităţi muribunde din România de astăzi. |

For the methodical way in which the film reveals the daily ordeal of a small population of outcasts living in the highly contaminated zone of a Transylvanian valley, where during more than 50 years the strategic uranium ore has been extracted without any regard for the life of the inhabitants, first for the profit of the USSR, then by the successive Romanian regimes. We have been particularly touched by the human approach, as well as by the multilayered narration which touches a taboo subject, while letting the viewers draw their own conclusions.
Pentru maniera metodică în care filmul dezvăluie chinul cotidian al unui grup marginalizat, abandonat într-o vale contaminată radioactiv din Ardeal, de unde vreme de mai bine de 50 de ani s-a extras strategicul minereu de uraniu, fără autorizaţie sanitară, mai întîi de către Uniunea Sovietică, iar mai apoi de statul comunist român. Juriul a fost impresionat de maniera umană şi înţelegătoare în care e tratat filmul, precum şi de scriitura polifonică a naraţiunii, care captează un subiect tabù, lăsînd spectatorul să-şi tragă propriile concluzii. |

This is a brave and heartening film that finds the metaphysical in the slightest gestures of the everyday. We find here a true cinematic vision.
Premiul pentru Cel mai bun film al secţiunii STUDENT revine fimului Until the Time Comes... (Ceasul care nu va veni...), care reuşeşte un lucru extrem de rar întîlnit în filmele care se fac astăzi despre Europa de Est: prezentarea unei lumi care dispare fără umbră de nostalgie sau compătimire. Este un film curajos, care găseşte semnificaţii metafizice în cele mai banale gesturi cotidiene, un film cu o reală viziune cinematografică. |
