| Aysel lives in Southern Germany, she is a religious Muslim, and life does not offer her much besides being a housewife and a mother, until one day, when she learns that the State Theatre in Stuttgart is looking for a non-professional actress for the leading part in the Greek tragedy Medeea. Aysel gets the part and starts the rehearsals, but what had seemed to be just an escape from her daily routine changes to something much more complicated. She is confronted with the tragic stories of other Muslim women, and, being the only one in the production who wears the Muslim headscarf, she finds herself in the position of defending her values in front of her Turkish colleagues whose views are more modern than hers. Theatrical background is suitable for self-reflection, and the author uses this feature to picture for the viewer Aysel’s confusions regarding her diverging desires towards tradition and modernity. |
| Aysel locuieşte în sudul Germaniei şi duce viaţa unei mame şi gospodine de provincie, pînă în momentul în care află că Teatrul de Stat din Stuttgart e în căutarea unei actriţe neprofesioniste pentru rolul Medeea. Aysel reuşeşte să obţină rolul şi începe repetiţiile, dar ceea ce părea doar o evadare din rutina zilnică se transformă în ceva mult mai complicat. În noul mediu, Aysel află poveştile – adesea tragice – ale altor femei musulmane. În plus, fiind singura care poartă vălul musulman, este pusă în situaţia de a apăra valorile în care crede în faţa colegelor ei care au renunţat demult la tradiţia turcă în favoarea culturii occidentale. În plină atmosferă a montării unei piese de teatru, spaţiu al libertăţii de expresie şi al introspecţiei, regizorul documentarului o urmăreşte pe Aysel în încercarea ei de a face un compromis între valorile tradiţionale la care ţine şi emanciparea occidentală pe care şi-o doreşte. |
