Synopsis / Sinopsis

In the midst of preparing Sibiu for 2007, when it was going to be the European Capital of Cultures, the life of the residents goes on. Not without any hassle. The centre of city becomes a building site, with everything being renovated. But what goes on behind the walls? At the upper floor of an old house in the Small Square, not being renovated precisely because it is too rundown, lives Ioan Drasovean, a septuagenarian constantly trying to keep up with changes. The camera follows him everywhere: at home, with a cat as company, where his few friends or acquaintances come to visit; while he takes an old vacuum cleaner to repair; talking to his friends in the park about international politics and mobile telephone invoices; even as he learns how to send text messages. This is a film about Sibiu and its residents, their problems and hopes. A dainty story, filled with tenderness and humour, about change and adjustment. Ioan Drasovean’s story is Romania’s story on EU accession.

În tumultul pregătirii Sibiului pentru anul 2007, când urma să fie Capitală Culturală Europeană, viaţa locuitorilor merge mai departe. Nu netulburată. Centrul oraşului este un şantier, totul se reface. Dar ce se întâmplă dincolo de ziduri? La etajul unei case istorice din Piaţa Mică, ocolită de renovări tocmai fiindcă este prea distrusă, locuieşte septuagenarul Ioan Draşovean, care caută să ţină pasul cu schimbările. Filmul îl urmăreşte peste tot: acasă, unde pisica îi ţine companie, primind vizitele câtorva prieteni sau cunoscuţi, ducând un aspirator vechi la reparat sau discutând cu amicii în parc despre politica internaţională şi facturile la telefonul mobil, ba chiar şi învăţând să trimită SMS-uri. Un film despre Sibiu şi despre locuitorii săi, cu problemele şi speranţele lor. O poveste delicată, plină de tandreţe şi umor, despre schimbare şi adaptare. Povestea lui Ioan Draşovean poate fi povestea României la intrarea în UE.
