Synopsis / Sinopsis
For centuries, China’s Songpan County has benefited from the trade route to the Tibetan Plateau, accessible only on horseback. A lot has changed since China opened its doors to the rest of the world. Stimulated by the competition for survival, tourism has grown into an important business. We meet the inhabitants of Songpan, and find out about their concerns. Tourism can be a lucrative business, but due to an unfair distribution, wealth goes to the rich, while the poor find it more and more difficult to make a living. Besides farming, lumbering, forging metal objects, and producing hand-made things for sale, guiding tourists in horseback excursions on the old Tibetan route is an income source not to be neglected. Like in the old days, horses still play a key role for the people in Songpan.
