Synopsis / Sinopsis

How does a 94 years old woman end up in an “arranged marriage”? Maria is the oldest woman in the village. She never went to school, she can’t read, nor write. But she knows work well – hoe has always been her friend. Maria worked on her family’s plot, being the eldest of the six children, as well as on the “collective” one, where she had to milk twenty cows every day. But not all who strive in their youth have a plentiful old age. The most precious moment in her life was the arrival of a man. He only came “with a cane and a flower.” And stayed. They needed neither a priest, nor a marriage officiant. They still live happily: she’s 94 now, and he 79. After a life’s work, Maria is ready to pass over, but does not have the two million Lei to pay for a funeral. She finds a solution. A film with snapshots separated by Romanian folk sayings, on Dvorak’s music.

Cum ajunge o femeie de 94 de ani să se căsătorească „pentru bani”? Maria este cea mai bătrână femeie din sat. Nu a mers nici o zi la şcoală, nu ştie să citească şi nici să scrie. Ce ştie este să muncească – sapa a fost dintotdeauna prietena ei. Maria a muncit şi în curtea familiei, ea fiind cea mai mare din cei şase copii, şi la „colectivă”, unde trebuia să mulgă douăzeci de vaci pe zi. Dar nu toţi cei care muncesc la tinereţe au la bătrâneţe. Cel mai frumos moment din viaţa ei a fost sosirea unui bărbat. El a venit doar „cu un toiag şi o floare”. Şi a rămas. Nu le-a trebuit nici biserică, nici primărie. Trăiesc fericiţi şi acum: ea are 94 de ani, iar el 79. După o viaţă de muncă, Maria e pregătită să treacă pe lumea cealaltă, însă nu are bani de înmormântare, i-ar trebui două milioane de lei. Găseşte o soluţie. Un film alcătuit din secvenţe scurte, croit pe muzica lui Dvorak şi fragmentat de zicale din folclorul românesc.
