Synopsis / Sinopsis

One-year-old Devi was found starving at a railway station in Delhi. The police took her to Palna, an orphanage, where she lived for a year. “Then two people with white faces came to play with me, and after three days I understood that they would be my mommy and daddy.” When Devi learned to talk she often wanted to talk about Amma, her first mother. “Amma mommy was sick and couldn’t take care of me. But she did hold me.” In the film, the 6-year-old Devi journeys to her own past, as her family adopts another daughter from Palna, a baby sister for Devi. “I used to live in Palna, too. I wasn’t bought from a store.”

Cînd oamenii au găsit-o părăsită într-o gară din Delhi şi aproape moartă de foame, Devi avea un an. Poliţia a dus-o la orfelinatul Palna, unde şi-a petrecut al doilea an al vieţii. „Apoi au venit doi oameni cu feţele albe şi s+au jucat cu mine, şi udpă trei zile am înţeles că ei vor fi mama şi tata”. Cînd a învăţat să vorbească, Devi povestea mereu despre Amma, mama ei adevărată, care „era bolnavă şi nu putea să aibă grijă de mine. Dar mă ţinea în braţe.”. Filmul ne+o arată pe Devi, care are acum şase ani şi călătoreşte în propriul ei trecut. Chiar în această perioadă, familia adoptă încă o fetiţă, tot de la orfelinatul Palna. Devi, care are acum o surioară, declară: „Şi eu am stat la Palna. Nu m-au cumpărat de la magazin”.
