Synopsis / Sinopsis
Interested in a model of a future-oriented society, director Andreas Stiglmayr discovers, 150 km west of Berlin, in the Altmark region, an alternative community founded over a decade ago by the so-called “Club 99”. The inhabitants of the youngest village in Germany (43 women, 35 men and 33 children) believe in environmentalism and sustainable development, autonomy and independence. However, matters are not as bright as they are… green. Just by observing without judging, listening without commenting, getting involved without losing control, the author discovers major disagreements regarding leadership responsibilities, animal herding, and the education of children. The author also gives voice to enemies from the outside, and to the frustrated or dissident members within, to talk about the challenges and consequences of change. In the small town Brod from western Macedonia, there is an old church dedicated to Saint Nicholas (also known as H’d’r Baba). The different communities in the village come to church to pray, all in the same day. The Orthodox Christians are followed by the Bektashi, the Halveti, and the Sunni Muslims. Everybody in the village agree that the church belongs to them all, and that every community is entitled to use it. This ethnologic documentary carries an optimistic message by showing that understanding and tolerance are possible between various ethnic (Macedonians, Albanians, Turks and Roma) and religious communities (Christians and Muslims) living together.
