Synopsis / Sinopsis

Elegant shop windows catch the eye of the passer- by on the central streets of Tehran, but you soon get the feeling there is something odd about the displays. And then it strikes you: the mannequins representing female figures have been grotesquely mutilated to fit the Islamic standards of female body. In the 1980’s the mannequins had disappeared from shop windows altogether. They made their comeback only after the Iranian-Iraqi war, first those representing male figures, and then the female mannequins, but only after manufacturers had carefully cut out their breasts and removed any other feminity traits. The film peeks behind the chadar that drapes Iranian society to speak in powerful visual images about the sometimes absurd outcome of social norms enforcement.

Vitrinele elegante ale magazinelor din centrul Teheranului atrag privirile trecătorilor. Curând însă sesizezi că ceva nu e în regulă: manechinele înfăţişând siluete feminine au fost mutilate pentru a corespunde femeii musulmane în conformitate cu standardul oficial. După războiul dintre Iran şi Iraq, manechinele au reapărut, după ce dispăruseră complet în anii 1980. Primele au fost cele masculine, iar mai apoi şi cele înfăţişînd femei, nu înainte de a li se decupa sînii şi de a li se înlătura orice trăsătură feminină. Filmul pătrunde dincolo de chadar-ul care acoperă societatea iraniană, vorbind în imagini puternice despre consecinţele, adesea absurde, ale normelor impuse de societate.
