Synopsis / Sinopsis
The women from the villages San Constantino and San Paolo Albanese (from the Italian region Basilicata / Lucania) sing in falsetto voices the vjeshet, ancient songs, transmitted from mother to daughter, telling the tale of the Albanians who found refuge in southern Italy five centuries ago. But there are also original creations, about hard-working women with sense of humour, about immigration and return home, songs “thrown” by the author from one hill to another and “picked up” by a messenger, during the hard fieldwork, or sung at get-togethers. In 1954, well-known anthropologist Ernesto de Martino organized an expedition in those parts, to record there vjeshet. Now, more than four decades from then, the villager women tell their tales, after having travelled to all Italy for concerts, having even reached France and Albania. By careful observation, director Rossella Schillaci puts forward the cultural values for the local women.
