| Synopsis / Sinopsis |
| The film's main focus is Ngunina, a young Maasai from Tanzania. She is the only one in her village who attended secondary school and has now returned home. Ngunina hopes to go to college as well, to become a teacher in her community. While she shares her story to the filmmaker – also the American sponsor of her studies in Colorado -, we gradually discover the complex nature of their relationship. Following the daily activities of the Maasai family, fragmented by the interactions between the film director and her subject, the documentary focuses on the discomfort moments – and the joint efforts to reach empathy – present when ethnography, “sponsorship” and friendship overlap. |
Filmul o are în centru pe Ngunina, o tânără Maasai din Tanzania. Ea este singura persoană din satul ei care urmat măcar liceul, iar acum a revenit la căminul părintesc. Ngunina speră să ajungă şi la colegiu, pentru a deveni profesoară în comunitatea sa. Pe măsură ce ea încearcă să îi împărtăşească povestea sa regizoarei – care este şi sponsorul american al studiilor sale la Colorado –, ni se dezvăluie treptat natura complexă a relaţiilor dintre cele două femei. Urmărind activităţile cotidiene ale familiei Maasai, segmentate de interacţiunile dintre documentarist şi subiectul său, filmul accentuează momentele de disconfort – şi eforturile simultane de a ajunge la empatie – care apar atunci când etnografia, „sponsorizarea” şi prietenia se intersectează.
