| Ardia is an ancient horse-race taking place in Sedilo, on the Italian island Sardinia. Each year, on the 6th and 7th of July, around one hundred well-trained riders compete in the honour of the Holy Emperor Constantine, the patron and protector of the village. The race is lead by a forward known as the first banner. This years, a young woman registered in the list of pretenders, which kept by the village priest. Director Marina Anedda researches the way the village men see the possibility that a woman might become, for the first time in the history of the race, the first banner. Does the have the necessary “animu” to lead Ardia? (a local word, translated as “soul”, which however means much more: skill, cold blood, courage and faith). The ethnographic film thus analyzes the relation between tradition and modernity in the context of a traditional ritual. |
Ardia este o străveche cursă de cai ce are loc în Sedilo (insula italiană Sardinia). În fiecare an, pe 6 și 7 iulie, vreo sută de călăreți bine antrenați se iau la întrecere în onoarea Sfântului Împărat Constantin, protectorul și patronul satului. Cursa este condusă de un înaintaș, numit prima bandiera. Anul acesta, o tânără s-a înscris și ea în lista de aspiranți la titlu, ținută de preotul parohiei. Regizoarea Marina Anedda cercetează cum văd bărbații satului posibilitatea ca o femeie să devină, pentru întâia oară în istoria cursei, prima bandiera: are ea acel animu necesar pentru a conduce Ardia? (Termenul specific locului, traductibil prin „suflet”, înseamnă de fapt mult mai mult: abilitate, sânge rece, curaj și devotament.) Filmul etnografic analizează astfel relația dintre tradiție și modernitate într-un context ritualic.
