| Synopsis / Sinopsis |
| The first grade in school – the year when childhood becomes both beautiful, and hard. The film follows four children from Germany, from families of different nationalities. Laethicia, Sanita, Fuat and Bright are seven and, for the first time in their lives, crawl away from the protection of their families and confront a world where competition and discipline dictate. Obstacles arise from all sides – the pages of the textbooks and the challenges with the colleagues – and joys seem to arise solely from breaks and vacations. The small ones are followed step by step, in class as they read, calculate or draw, as well as during talks or in breaks. The rigours of school prove to be quite harsh for the children of immigrant families, and the children seem trapped. Who of them will be present next year, in the photo of second-graders, and who will remain in the first grade? A ballad about childhood and the great small things that matter. |
