Synopsis / Sinopsis

The Balkan Endemic Nephropathy is a disease that makes hundreds of victims in Romania each year, most of them coming from Mehedinţi. The Balkan Endemic Nephropathy (BEN) is a deadly and irreversible kidney disease, geographically limited to a couple of rural regions in the Balkan Peninsula. The first village in Romania in which BEN was discovered is Ergheviţa, in Mehedinţi. It appears that potential centers of contagion exist close to Drobeta Turnu-Severin: in Ergheviţa, Izvorul Aneştilor, Hinova, Bistriţa and close to the towns of Strehaia and Vânju Mare. Several thousands of people died of this enigmatic disease and at present experts estimate that only in Romania, in the south-vest region, there are approximately 20 thousands of people in the preclinical stage of the disease.

Nefropatia Endemică Balcanică este o boală care face în fiecare an sute de victime în România, cele mai multe dintre acestea aflându-se în judeţul Mehedinţi. Nefropatia Endemică Balcanică (NEB) este o boală de rinichi fatală, ireversibilă, limitată geografic la câteva regiuni rurale din Peninsula Balcanică. Primul sat din România în care a fost depistat NEB-ul este localitatea Ergheviţa din judeţul Mehedinţi. Se pare că focare posibile s-ar afla situate în apropierea Municipiului Drobeta Turnu-Severin: la Ergheviţa, Izvorul Aneştilor, Hinova, Bistriţa şi în apropierea oraşelor Strehaia şi Vânju Mare Câteva mii de persoane au murit de această boală enigmatică, iar în momentul de faţă specialiştii apreciază că numai în România, în zona de sud-vest, aproximativ 20 de mii de persoane sunt în stadiul preclinic.
