In 2007, the Cinematheque Astra Film was a one-year-marathon of the best documentary films, offering to the citizens and visitors of Sibiu the only constant program of the Cultural Capital of Europe – Sibiu 2007, thanks to the daily screenings of documentary films appreciated and awarded during the last 15 years worldwide.
In 2008, Astra Film is presented in Paris (Jean Rouch International Festival), in Novosibirsk (Meetings in Siberia, International Festival of documentary film), and in Poland (Poznan and Krakow), and in the same year, the Cinematheque Astra Film continues with weekly screenings on deferent themes, in Sibiu, Deva and Bucharest.
For the Cinematheque Astra Film Sibiu 2008, we have chosen the favorite themes of the audience of Astra Film festival, represented by documentaries which bring us new perspectives about subjects that seem to us well-known: Women, Communism/Post-communism, Children, My Transylvania, Globalization, Transhumance, Gypsies, Winter.
How do the fat girls live in the European contemporary society where the femininity, the feminine beauty must follow the models dictated by the fashion and cosmetics industry, saying that women have to be slim? Or those from Uganda, where girls are prepared for their marriage by being fattened in order to correspond to the beauty standards in that particular society? How do children from an isolated village of Nepal live? How is Transylvania seen from the Saxon’s perspective? How is transhumance in Himalaya,The Alps, The Carpathian Mountains, The Mountains of Tibet and The Scottish Mountains? Just a few questions to which you can find the answer watching the films of the Cinematheque Astra Film of Sibiu.
