Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking SIBIU 20 – 24 October 2009 Tuesday - Saturday / 9 am - 5 pm (five days)
After the success of last year’s workshop in Sibiu, organized by the UCL - Anthropology Department and Marie Curie SocAnth, we would like to announce the Introductory Workshop on Documentary Filmmaking to be held at the Astra Film Sibiu.
This workshop is aimed at preparing social scientists to use digital film in their fieldwork. Each workshop provides a generic understanding of digital filmmaking in certain parts of the globe. There will be a particular concentration on hands-on teaching of film production techniques by our expert tutors Dr Michael Yorke, Dr Maarten Roos, and Dr Alison Kahn, who have made films professionally and for research purposes in many areas of the world.
OADF’s five-day intensive workshop will give you an OADF Certificate of proficiency in documentary filmmaking. By the end of the course you will have learned the basic skills to make a short documentary:
• for research purposes,
• as an AV addenda for a thesis or publication,
• for screening at a film festival,
• for internet distribution,
• for educational use,
You will complete four hands-on camera exercises, write and redraft a film proposal, shoot in teams on location in Sibiu and help us edit you rcollaborative efforts into a short 1-5 minute video, which you can take home on DVD. You will be aware of the ethical, financial, legal, and stylistic issues involved in representing other people. By viewing a variety of different socially relevant films, you will be aware of different genres and understand the style and approach relevant to your research work.
The participation fee is 1050 Ron, or 250€, which includes training and accommodation (Youth Hostel, 19-25 October) and meals (breakfast and lunch) for the participants. Those workshop participants who will decide to participate at the Astra Film Festival 2009 (26 october - 1 november) will have discount at the youth hostel accomodation during the period of the festival.
