Event meeting with Frederick Wiseman
One of the long expected moments of Astra Film Festival 2016 is on Friday, the 21 of October, at 6:15 pm at Auditorium Hall of ULBS: the meeting with the award winning director Frederick Wiseman, believed to be one of the most important documentary filmmakers in the world.
50 years of artistic success
Wiseman’s activity stretches over a period of more than 50 years, making just as many films and largely contributing to world cinema. The filmmaker owns four Emmies, in 2014 he was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, and in 2016, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that he is to receive an Oscar for his lifetime achievements. Three of his masterpieces, Crazy Horse and Domestic Violence I and II, will be screened at Astra Film Festival, and the meeting with the director is a unique opportunity for film buffs, but also for guests from the film industry who are present in Sibiu to talk to a legend of documentary cinema.
The meeting with Wiseman will be preceded by the screening of the film Crazy Horse, at 4:00 pm. Wiseman, a master of editing film content, splendidly captures on camera a world as it has never been seen before, depicting a fresco of the illustrious cabaret in Paris at the Crazy Horse nightclub.
Films with moving stories at AFF 2016
On Friday, the 21 of October, at 7:30 pm, at Auditorium Hall the film Homme Less (directed by Thomas Wirthensohn) is screened, a documentary which shouldn’t be missed about a side of the American Dream, hidden somewhere in the underbelly of society. Mark, a former fashion model, currently a fashion photographer, present at all high-life events in New York, apparently has a luxurious life, except for one detail which doesn’t seem to fit in this puzzle: he lives on the roof of an East Village building.
At the same venue, at 9:30 pm the film of the year 2016 will be screened: Fuocoammare (directed by Gianfranco Rosi), the first documentary which has won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, being Italy’s entry for the 2017 Oscars. The film presents the drama of the African refugees who land on the island of Lampedusa, in Southern Italy, being the first stop on their way to Europe.
The Gala Awards
On Saturday, the 22 of October, at 7:00 pm, at Thalia Hall, in the presence of hundreds of directors and special guests, Astra Film Festival 2016 announces the winning films of the 23rd edition, at the Gala Awards. 12 professionals from the European film industry will judge 40 films included in the 4 competitive sections. The AFF 2016 Gala Awards closes with a concert given by Moonlight Breakfast, at 10:00 pm. The audience has the opportunity to listen for the first time in Sibiu tracks from their latest album.
The winning films can be seen again on Sunday, from 12:00 pm in three of the festival venues dintre: Thalia Hall, Auditorium Hall and Astra Film Cinema.
