Making Legends - Editing Music Documentaries

Editing Masterclass - Pablo D’Ambrosi

In conversation with Bafta-nominated director Liviu Tipurita

There’s something special and peculiar about making music documentaries and it’s not the music itself. It’s something about creating a ‘myth’, about crafting the ‘legend’ behind the artist. But a documentary filmmaker’s responsibility is not only towards the artist or the fans, it’s also towards ‘truth’’. This dynamic interplay between authenticity and legend is the very foundation of a great story.

In this special Masterclass, Pablo D’Ambrosi, London-based Italian feature editor shares his insights and creative approaches to making music documentaries. Through his extensive career, Pablo has worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, Jamiroquai and many others.

Unveiling the delicate balance between truth and legend-making, Pablo discusses his work on five very different feature-length music documentaries: ‘Post Malone: Runaway,' a gripping account of the Grammy-nominated rapper's rollercoaster 2020 tour; 'Cool Daddio: The Second Youth Of R. Stevie Moore,' a biographical exploration of the underground music icon who produced over 400 albums from his bedroom; 'All Of Those Voices,' a box office record-breaker chronicling the solo career of One Direction's Louis Tomlinson; 'Two Seven Clash' an independent film that captures the explosion of reggae and punk rock in 1977, featuring stars like Bob Marley, The Clash, and The Sex Pistols; and 'The Rolling Stones - Olé Olé Olé! A Trip Across Latin America', a powerful account of the Stones tour in South America and their political and social impact on the Continent.

Pablo D'Ambrosi's Masterclass offers a unique glimpse into the intricate process that transforms raw footage into landmark documentaries.
