Light Falls Vertical
Efthymia Zymvragaki • Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain • 2022 • 85 min
A deft, articulate deconstruction of the relationship between violence and identity that urges us to descend into the most frightening and intimate layers of memory in order to contemplate the fragility of being human.
Ernesto, a man who has experienced domestic violence both as a witness and as an abuser, contacts filmmaker Efthymia Zymvragaki to help him exorcize his traumatic experiences via cinema. In equal measure portrait and diary, the film deals with the issues of domestic violence and mental health, alternating between Ernesto's point of view and the director's autobiography. And, exactly where the two stories meet, the fathers' emotional unavailability, violence and inadequacy are countered by escaping from the prison of memory through performative, confessional and poetic means.
