A film that recovers intimate family moments recorded on videotapes in Moldova in the 1990s, containing messages from children to their mothers who have gone to work in the West.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moldovan women began to go to work in Western Europe, leaving their children in the care of relatives. While mothers sent home money and various goods, children answered via a new way of communicating: images and messages recorded on video cassettes for their mothers. The documentary Love is Not an Orange is a much-needed film which reclaims the past by centering on a whole generation of girls who grew up without mothers.
