DocTalk As many stars in the sky, as much plastic in the oceans

In recent decades, the pace at which we produce and consume plastic has dramatically increased, as has the problem of plastic pollution. The effects of this situation are catastrophic, plastic pollution kills birds and marine animals, and microplastics have made their way from the environment into human organs. People who throw plastic into recycling bins believe they are not contributing to this issue, but in reality, we don’t know if that’s truly the case. Major companies claim to be sustainable, but environmentalists say that their campaigns are actually just PR moves. Meanwhile, the plastic industry plans to expand in the coming decades.

Plastic Fantastic by Isa Willinger. The global plastic crisis is deconstructed and reassembled in a well-documented cinematic documentary that not only points out the problems but also offers concrete solutions to this phenomenon. There are 500 times more plastic particles in Earth's waters than there are stars in our galaxy. Plastic is in oceans, rivers, air, soil, and even in the human body. The documentary closely follows circular production, the greenwashing phenomenon, the evolution and effects of microplastics, carbon emissions, and ecological racism. We meet pro-plastic lobbyists, scientists, and activists who walk through Hawaii and Kenya collecting waste with their bare hands while trying to put an end to catastrophic production. "Plastic Fantastic" is made by a director who knew how to transform everything into a deep and captivating film, and above all, a human one.

The debate aims to analyze possible solutions to stop this phenomenon.

  • What can the government, major companies, and we, as ordinary people, do to reduce plastic consumption?
  • How can we truly contribute to having a cleaner and healthier planet?

These are questions we will try to answer with the help of guests and the audience.
