Fragments of Ice

Maria Stoianova • Ukraine, Norway • 2024 • 95 min
Romanian Premiere
Drawing on family video archives, Fragments on Ice is an autobiographical chronicle of the mystification of "the West", the hopes and dissppointments of transition in Eastern Europe before and after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
In 1986, the director's father, a Ukrainian figure skater, bought a video camera with which he filmed his tours in the West, as well as home movies. Conceptually, the documentary is based on a dialog between the images filmed by the parents and the daughter's auto-ethnographic analysis. While the camera's view of the parents reflects their desire to emigrate and their fascination with economic prosperity outside the Eastern Bloc, Stoianova aims to understand how this view overlaps and contradicts her childhood memories and the way in which significant socio-political events were represented at the time, such as the Chernobyl accident, the 1991 coup against Gorbachev, and Ukraine gainingits independence.
