The touching portrait of bohemian cultural icon Philly Abe, a No Wave punk performer, artist, and underground film star, that deals with dissensus, irreverence and frailty.
Septuagenarian Philly Abe risks losing her rent-regulated apartment in the Lower East Side. Once a star of the 80s and 90s scintillating underground scene, Abe was a musician and a performer featured in films by independent filmmakers such as Todd Verrow, Nelson Sullivan, and George Kuchar. Still a lively voice of protest and a mixed-media artist, she encounters director Elizabeth Nichols, with whom she develops an intimate connection over several years. While Flying Lessons begins as a critique of corporate gentrification in New York City, by blending archival footage and present-day confessions, it unfolds as a tender depiction of anarchy and sensibility.
