In Egypt, adoption is forbidden by law, so a woman who can't have children becomes attached to a little girl from a Coptic Christian orphanage whom she considers her daughter.
Hoda is part of the Coptic Christian community, sings in the choir and for 20 years has been going to a shelter for orphaned children to spend time with Mariam, whom she considers her daughter. The relationship between the two is capricious. Mariam, who has since become a woman, sees Hoda more as a friend and wants to get married to escape the constraints of the shelter. Another failed relationship is between Hoda and her elderly mother whom she cares for. Alternating moments of cine-verite with interviews, the movie offers a glimpse into the lives of women in Egypt today where guilt, complexes and frustrations are emotionally passed down from one generation to the next.
