According to the Kanun, under certain conditions, a woman can assume the social role of a man. She becomes a Burrnesha, and after taking an oath, she can never return to a woman's life. She must wear only men's clothing until death, behave like a man, and assume the status and responsibilities of a man. This intriguing phenomenon, which astonishingly survives in a perfectly preserved form somewhere in contemporary Europe, overturns all stereotypes and projections in discussions about gender identity.
