Intercepted

Oksana Karpovych • Canada, Ukraine, France • 2024 • 93 min
Starting from a series of telephone conversations between Russian soldiers on missions in Ukraine and their loved ones at home, intercepted over several months in 2022, filmmaker Oksana Karpovych juxtaposes these audio fragments with images that underline the absence and destruction in abandoned or sparsely populated villages and towns.
A minimalist documentary that deals with the complexities of the war in Ukraine by depicting the subjective perspectives of Russian soldiers and the echoes of Putinist propaganda among them and other anonymous Russians.Spectral and penetrating, Intercepted interrogates the psychological underpinnings of the soldiers: whether they chose to be there, what they think about when they commit acts of violence, whether they know they are heading for death, or how they imagine they will resume their lives in the end. By making us confront the absurdity of war, the movie suggests the perversity of the relationship between choice, power, ideology, and dehumanization.
