Savanna and the Mountain

Paulo Carneiro • Portugal, Uruguay • 2024 • 77 min
Romanian Premiere
A clever documentary that wittly stages the protest of a small rural Portuguese community against the construction of minesby a British corporation where they live.
Savannah Resources wants to start Europe's largest open-pit lithium extraction in a mountainous region in northeast Portugal. Despite the fact that, ironically, lithium is the main resource needed to run electric cars, a greener form of transportation, the residents of Covas do Barroso fear the impact of the mines on the environment andtheir lifestyle. Contacted by the villagers, director Paulo Carneiro works with them to stage their protests, pastiching — with Postmodernist distance and a penchant for the absurd —the conventions of the western genre, another famous terrain for unequal confrontations between locals and big corporations.
