How did people live in Romania between 1942 and 1989? How does life from that time appear in the home movies of the era?
Ana Lungu offers us, through "Triton," one of the most significant Romanian montage films, based on home movies filmed in Romania between 1942 and 1989. The documentary presents three stories, each stylistically distinct but connected by a female narrative voice: a father films his daughter's childhood in 1980s Romania; a music teacher documents the lives of family members and friends in the 1960s and 1970s; an aristocrat captures images from the summer of 1942, when Romania was allied with Nazi Germany. The director's approach, through the juxtaposition and commentary of these family films, reveals a rich fresco, a personalized variant of the country's recent history.
