State Funeral - Romanian premiere
Screening followed by discussion with Emil Hurezeanu
”State Funeral”, the latest film bearing the signature of Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa, which recently had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, explores the impact of Stalin's death in 1953 on the entire Soviet Union and captures the moment of burial as a climax of the cult regarding the personality of the dictator. Loznitsa dissects in its unmistakable style this "Great Divide" by editing rare or long forgotten archival images. The projection will be complemented by a discussion with Emil Hurezeanu, Romania's ambassador to Berlin, about the nature and legacies of the communist regimes, which still haunts the contemporary world, starting with Loznitsa's film.
