In the Hmong ethnic group in Vietnam, boys choose their future wives through traditions that cause quite a stir in the community, putting the girls, their families and the school staff on high alert.
For three years, director Diem Ha Le documents these traditions from within the Hmong community deep in the Vietnamese mountains, focusing on the community in general and on a family in particular. Di, the teenage daughter, dreams of going to school, earning money and having many lovers, but in reality she works all day long helping her mother, goes to school and playfully trains with other girls so that they are able to escape when they are finally kidnapped. The documentary explores a shocking reality through the grown-up conversations the girls are having and then shows what happens when Di is indeed kidnapped.
