Astra Film Festival 2024 starts this weekend in Sibiu

The International Documentary Film Festival Astra Film Festival, now in its fourth decade, begins on Sunday, in Sibiu, with a film screened for the first time, one that is already being talked about superlatively. It is about the documentary " Dad", by Lina Vdov and Radu Ciorniciu c. Important cultural event of the fall, AFF2024 (October 20-27) means eight days with dozens of premiere films , meetings with directors and sessions Q&A, masterclasses, debates, exhibitions and dinner-concerts. And starting on Saturday, October 26, an important selection of films from the festival will be able to be viewed online throughout the territory of Romania.

The Astra Film Festival 2024 opening gala will take place at the Thalia hall of the Sibiu Philharmonic, on Sunday, October 20, starting at 18:00, in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Raluca Turcan. The event will be presented by the journalist Amalia Enache and will also include two discussions by her: one with the film critic Victor Morozov - about the role of the documentary film in the education and evolution of individuals and communities , and another with the rector of the University from Bucharest, Marian Preda - about the phenomenon of migration, one of the central themes of the documentary film that will be screened at the opening. Another special moment will be Dora Gaitanovici's piano recital. An artistic moment will also be supported by the Japanese group IX Percussion.

Valuable films in the official selection . Along with the 18 documentary films about Romania or signed by Romanian directors, most of them premiered at AFF2024, the official selection will include approximately 100 new productions made on all continents. The festival's grand prizes will be awarded by juries made up of prestigious documentary film professionals for the best productions in the four competitions: Central and Eastern European , Romania, Emerging Voices of Documentary Film and the Student Competition. Six debates in the DocTalk program . The organizers propose a series of debates on topics addressed by some of the most interesting films in the festival. The discussions, moderated by formidable journalists, with guests to match , will take place in the Thalia Hall every evening immediately after the film at 6:00 p.m., starting Monday, October 20, until Friday, October 26. Cinema New Media Dome , located in Pia ța Mare in Sibiu, is also this year the ground zero of the cinema of the future, where spectators have the opportunity to be, in their own way, in the middle of the action. Astra Film Festival is also this year the only festival in Romania that offers the public screenings of full- dome immersive films, as if from the future. Opportunities for aspiring filmmakers . Young European filmmakers are also enjoying unique opportunities at AFF2024 this year. Eight projects by European directors and producers, who have film projects in development, will benefit from mentoring sessions from recognized industry and cinema professionals. And the students will have a special program, DocStudent Hub , in which they will participate in workshops, masterclasses and practical activities in the field of art, production and distribution of documentary film . Students and professors from prestigious universities in Prague, Zagreb, Vilnius, Bratislava, Zlin, Cluj-Napoca and Bucharest will participate.
