About the event

The Ursulines: 300 Years of History, 300 Years of Future The Astra Film Festival, in partnership with Brukenthal von Studio, invites the public to an event dedicated to the history and future of the Ursulines complex, one of the key landmarks of Sibiu’s cultural heritage. The event will take place on October 24, at 3:00 p.m., at the Thalia Hall in Sibiu. The program will begin with the screening of a 10-minute film produced by Astra Film about the history of the Ursulines, followed by a DocTalk with Emil Hurezeanu, Robert Hanea, and Andreea Esca. Over the course of more than three centuries, the Ursulines have played numerous roles in the life of the city. Today, the challenge is not merely to preserve the buildings, but to find a contemporary purpose for this place—one that honors its history while keeping it active, open, and relevant to the community. The Porumbac experience offers a starting point for this conversation. Heritage should not be preserved as an object locked away in a museum, but understood as a living legacy: we save what we have received, bring it back to life, restore its meaning, and pass it on. How can heritage be protected without freezing it in the past? What new functions can restore its relevance? And what role can the Ursulines play in Sibiu’s cultural life over the next 300 years? The event invites a discussion about heritage as a living presence, about responsibility, and about how a place steeped in history can become an active part of the city’s future.
