Who Keeps the Mountains Alive?

Romania has the second-largest sheep population in the European Union after Spain, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the European total. Many animals are raised in extensive and semi-extensive pastoral systems, through local transhumance and communal or mountain grazing. Although Romanian culture is deeply rooted in sheepherding and transhumance, few people today are familiar with the lives of shepherds and what it means to spend months on the road with the flock.

The dialogue begins with the world of the transhumant shepherds of Transylvania, captured by Dumitru Budrala in the films “La drum” and “Calea laptelui.” The perspective is broadened by “Grass: A Nation’s Battle for Life” (“Iarba”), the 1925 documentary about the seasonal migration of the Bakhtiari people in Iran, which involved over 50,000 people and approximately 500,000 animals. “Sweetgrass” follows one of the last great migrations of herds to the mountain pastures of Montana, while “To Hold a Mountain” depicts a female shepherd’s struggle in Montenegro to protect her community’s pastures.

 În 2026, declarat de ONU Anul Internațional al Pajiștilor și Păstorilor, acest mod de viață este recunoscut pentru contribuția sa la gestionarea terenurilor, biodiversitate și reziliența comunităților rurale. Dar mai poate fi el continuat în condițiile economice și legislative actuale? Concurența produselor din import, dificultățile de procesare și comercializare, restricțiile sanitare privind circulația animalelor și costurile tot mai mari afectează viabilitatea gospodăriilor pastorale. Lor li se adaugă valorificarea dificilă și uneori nerentabilă a lânii, problemă abordată în documentarul „Lână om oaie”. DocTalk-ul aduce experiența ciobanilor în dialog cu specialiști, întrebând nu doar cum poate fi păstrată o tradiție, ci în ce condiții păstoritul mai poate avea un viitor.
